Genome-wide association study and population-based evaluation of patients with diabetic foot ulcers
Main Applicant – Dr Lo Zhiwen Joseph, Senior Consultant, Woodlands Health
Given the global epidemic of diabetes mellitus (DM), up to 1 in 3 patients with DM face a lifetime risk of developing a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). Within the literature, there is some evidence suggesting that genetic factors may play a role in the development of DFU. However, there have only been two genome wide association studies (GWAS) conducted to date, both of which focused on European and Scotland cohort.
Hence, our study aims to perform the first GWAS of an Asian population with DFU. By leveraging data from TRUST and PRECISE-SG100K, we would be able to conduct a comprehensive analysis to identify specific genetic loci associated with DFU in Asian patients with DM. The study could improve our understanding of the genetic underpinnings of DRU in Asian populations, potentially leading to better prevention and treatment strategies tailored to this demographic.
